The Missing MassLa masa que falta

There are two ways to weigh a system in space: add up the light, or watch how things move. For the Solar System the two agree. For a galaxy they do not, and for a cluster of galaxies they are out by more than a factor of ten. Students arrange mass and watch the rotation curve it makes, turn a measured speed into an enclosed mass, then take a rotation curve built from a real galaxy’s published parameters and try to fit it with stars alone — and fail, in the specific way the field failed for a decade, before adding a halo and getting it right. It closes on Zwicky’s cluster and the mass budget of the universe. It is how dark matter was found, and it is a measurement rather than a theory.

Anywhere after orbital motion has been covered, and it needs nothing else. It pairs naturally with a unit on galaxies or on cosmology, and it also works as a single-session standalone: thirty-three screens, one argument, and a result students derive rather than receive. If you teach Kepler earlier in the term, this is the investigation that shows what happens when Kepler stops working. The rotation-curve fitting sequence at steps 13-19 is the longest single activity in Gravitas and the closest any of these investigations comes to what research actually feels like; if you are short of time it is the part to protect, and steps 2-3 and 6-8 are the scaffolding that makes it work.Anywhere after orbital motion has been covered, and it needs nothing else. The interface is operable from the keyboard, including the investigations, the measuring tools and the dialogs, which trap focus and return it. Measurements and state changes are announced through a live region, and the canvas carries a text description of what is on it that updates as the system evolves. Automated checks (axe-core) and a set of manual keyboard walkthroughs run in continuous integration on every change.
