Finding Planets by Their TugEncontrar planetas por su tirón
A planet you cannot see still pulls on its star, and the star moves. Measure that motion two different ways, turn it into a mass, and combine it with the radius a transit gave you to work out what kind of world it is.Un planeta que no puedes ver sigue tirando de su estrella, y la estrella se mueve. Mide ese movimiento de dos maneras distintas, conviértelo en una masa y combínalo con el radio que te dio un tránsito para deducir qué clase de mundo es.

What students will be able to doLo que el estudiantado podrá hacer
- Explain why a star and its planet both orbit their common center of massExplicar por qué una estrella y su planeta orbitan ambos su centro de masas común
- Read a radial-velocity curve and identify its period and semi-amplitude KLeer una curva de velocidad radial e identificar su periodo y su semiamplitud K
- Use a measured K to estimate a planet mass, and say why that mass is usually a lower limitUsar una K medida para estimar la masa de un planeta, y decir por qué esa masa suele ser un límite inferior
- Explain why a transiting planet escapes the M sin i ambiguityExplicar por qué un planeta en tránsito se libra de la ambigüedad de M sen i
- Describe what astrometry measures and when it works better than radial velocityDescribir qué mide la astrometría y cuándo funciona mejor que la velocidad radial
- Combine a mass and a radius into a bulk density, and say what density can and cannot tell youCombinar una masa y un radio en una densidad media, y decir qué puede y qué no puede decirte la densidad
- Place a characterized planet against a modeled habitable zone without overclaimingSituar un planeta caracterizado frente a una zona habitable modelada sin afirmar de más

The third of the three exoplanet investigations, after Finding Planets by Their Shadows and before or after The Goldilocks Question. It closes the inference chain: Shadows measures a radius, this one measures a mass and combines the two into a density, and Goldilocks asks what that buys. It works standalone, but the payoff at steps 30-33 lands hardest for students who have done the transit investigation. The third of the three exoplanet investigations, after Finding Planets by Their Shadows and before or after The Goldilocks Question. The interface is operable from the keyboard, including the investigations, the measuring tools and the dialogs, which trap focus and return it. Measurements and state changes are announced through a live region, and the canvas carries a text description of what is on it that updates as the system evolves. Automated checks (axe-core) and a set of manual keyboard walkthroughs run in continuous integration on every change.
