Why Mars Goes BackwardsPor qué Marte va hacia atrás
Twice every three years Mars stops in the sky, reverses, and loops back on itself. Watched from outside, nothing of the sort happens: Earth and Mars both go round the Sun the same way and never turn back. You will measure both orbits, predict what Mars does when seen from Earth, then switch the reference frame and watch the loop draw itself. Nothing in the physics changes when you do. That is the entire point, and it is what took astronomy from Ptolemy to Copernicus.

What students will be able to doLo que el estudiantado podrá hacer
- Describe retrograde motion as an observation, separately from any explanation of itDescribir el movimiento retrógrado como una observación, aparte de cualquier explicación de él
- Compute a synodic period from two orbital periods and say what it countsCalcular un periodo sinódico a partir de dos periodos orbitales y decir qué cuenta
- Predict and then verify that a retrograde loop happens at oppositionPredecir y luego verificar que un bucle retrógrado ocurre en la oposición
- Explain retrograde motion as a consequence of the observer’s own motion, without invoking anything the planet doesExplicar el movimiento retrógrado como consecuencia del movimiento del propio observador, sin invocar nada que haga el planeta
- Say what a reference frame is, and what changes and what does not when you switch oneDecir qué es un sistema de referencia, y qué cambia y qué no al cambiar de uno
- State what the retrograde loop does and does not establish about which body is at the centerIndicar qué establece y qué no establece el bucle retrógrado sobre qué cuerpo está en el centro

Any time after circular orbits have been introduced; it pairs naturally with Kepler’s Laws and works well immediately after it, since students arrive already able to read a period off the inspector. It also stands alone as a single-session investigation, and it is the one investigation in the set that is as much history and philosophy of science as it is physics. If you teach a unit on the Copernican revolution, this is the investigation that lets students perform the observation the revolution was about rather than being told it.Any time after circular orbits have been introduced; it pairs naturally with Kepler’s Laws and works well immediately after it, since students arrive already able to read a period off the inspector. The interface is operable from the keyboard, including the investigations, the measuring tools and the dialogs, which trap focus and return it. Measurements and state changes are announced through a live region, and the canvas carries a text description of what is on it that updates as the system evolves. Automated checks (axe-core) and a set of manual keyboard walkthroughs run in continuous integration on every change.
