TidesMareas
Tides are not caused by strong gravity. They are caused by gravity being unequal across an object, and the whole investigation is built on that one subtraction: take the pull on the center away from the pull on the near side and the far side, and everything from the two daily high tides to a star being shredded by a black hole falls out of what is left.

What students will be able to doLo que el estudiantado podrá hacer
- Explain why an extended object feels a different gravitational pull at each point in itExplicar por qué un objeto extenso siente una atracción gravitatoria distinta en cada uno de sus puntos
- State that a tide is the difference between the local pull and the pull on the center, and use that to say why there are two ocean bulges rather than oneEnunciar que una marea es la diferencia entre la atracción local y la atracción sobre el centro, y usarlo para decir por qué hay dos abultamientos oceánicos y no uno
- Measure how tidal strength changes with separation and with the mass of the companion, and state both relationshipsMedir cómo cambia la intensidad de marea con la separación y con la masa del compañero, y enunciar ambas relaciones
- Compare the tide a body raises against that body’s own gravity, and predict whether it holds togetherComparar la marea que un cuerpo levanta con la gravedad propia de ese cuerpo, y predecir si se mantendrá unido
- Explain why a Roche limit is different for every pair of objects, and say what it does and does not predictExplicar por qué el límite de Roche es distinto para cada par de objetos, y decir qué predice y qué no

Immediately after Newtonian gravity and the inverse-square law have been introduced, and before or instead of a lecture treatment of tides. It also works late in the term as the bridge between everyday gravity and compact objects, since the last third is a tidal disruption event done honestly.Immediately after Newtonian gravity and the inverse-square law have been introduced, and before or instead of a lecture treatment of tides. The interface is operable from the keyboard, including the investigations, the measuring tools and the dialogs, which trap focus and return it. Measurements and state changes are announced through a live region, and the canvas carries a text description of what is on it that updates as the system evolves. Automated checks (axe-core) and a set of manual keyboard walkthroughs run in continuous integration on every change.
