When Orbits LockCuando las órbitas se enganchan
Three of Jupiter’s moons keep time with each other, Pluto crosses Neptune’s orbit and has never come near it, and thousands of asteroids sit sixty degrees ahead of Jupiter and stay there. All three are the same phenomenon, and none of them is explained by the thing everybody quotes: the ratio of the periods. You will measure the ratios, find that the tidiest one in the system belongs to a moon in no resonance at all, and then measure the quantity that actually settles it — an angle that either swings or goes round.

What students will be able to doLo que el estudiantado podrá hacer
- Measure orbital periods and period ratios from the orbits themselves, and find the nearest small-integer ratio to eachMedir periodos orbitales y razones de periodos a partir de las propias órbitas, y hallar la razón de enteros pequeños más cercana a cada una
- Explain why a near-rational period ratio is weak evidence, using a case where the closest ratio in the system belongs to a body in no resonanceExplicar por qué una razón casi racional es una prueba débil, usando un caso en el que la razón más limpia del sistema pertenece a un cuerpo sin resonancia alguna
- Build a resonant angle from mean longitudes and longitudes of periapsis, and say why the combination is chosen so the coefficients sum to zeroConstruir un ángulo resonante a partir de longitudes medias y longitudes del periastro, y explicar por qué se elige la combinación cuyos coeficientes suman cero
- Tell libration from circulation, and recognize the records that cannot distinguish themDistinguir la libración de la circulación, y reconocer los registros que no permiten separarlas
- Use the libration of the Laplace argument and of Pluto’s 3:2 argument to explain what each resonance protectsUsar la libración del argumento de Laplace y del argumento 3:2 de Plutón para explicar qué protege cada resonancia
- Distinguish a stable equilibrium from an unstable one at Jupiter’s Lagrange points, working in the rotating frameDistinguir un equilibrio estable de uno inestable en los puntos de Lagrange de Júpiter, trabajando en el marco rotante

After Kepler’s laws and after students are comfortable with the idea that an orbit has a period and a shape. It sits naturally beside a unit on the Solar System’s architecture, and it is the obvious companion to any treatment of planetary migration or the asteroid belt. No calculus, no differential equations; the only new mathematical object is an angle built as an integer combination of other angles, and the investigation derives it rather than asserting it.After Kepler’s laws and after students are comfortable with the idea that an orbit has a period and a shape. The interface is operable from the keyboard, including the investigations, the measuring tools and the dialogs, which trap focus and return it. Measurements and state changes are announced through a live region, and the canvas carries a text description of what is on it that updates as the system evolves. Automated checks (axe-core) and a set of manual keyboard walkthroughs run in continuous integration on every change.
