Planets in Binary StarsPlanetas en estrellas binarias
Most stars come in pairs, so most planets have to make a living in a system with two suns. Some orbits work and some do not, and the line between them is sharper than you would guess. Find it twice — once for a planet around one star, once for a planet around both — and then find out how much of what you just measured was the physics and how much was the arithmetic.

What students will be able to doLo que el estudiantado podrá hacer
- Predict which planetary orbits in a binary survive an integration, for a planet around one star and for a planet around bothPredecir qué órbitas planetarias en una binaria sobreviven a una integración, tanto para un planeta alrededor de una estrella como alrededor de las dos
- Distinguish a physical outcome — ejection, collision, survival — from a numerical failure of the integration that produced itDistinguir un resultado físico —expulsión, colisión, supervivencia— de un fallo numérico de la integración que lo produjo
- Show that repeating a run at half the timestep, not conserving energy, is the test that settles an outcomeDemostrar que repetir una ejecución con la mitad del paso, y no conservar la energía, es la prueba que zanja un resultado
- State what a finite integration can and cannot establish about the long-term fate of an orbitDecir qué puede y qué no puede establecer una integración finita sobre el destino a largo plazo de una órbita
- Use a published empirical stability boundary within its stated assumptions and range, and say what it does not coverUsar una frontera de estabilidad empírica publicada dentro de sus supuestos y su rango declarados, y decir qué es lo que no cubre

A long investigation, 40 to 50 minutes, that needs a full lab period. It has no prerequisites beyond knowing that gravity holds orbits together, and it sits naturally after any investigation that has established Kepler orbits. In a computational physics or scientific-computing course it can be run for its second half alone: steps 13 to 20 are a self-contained convergence study that happens to be about planets.A long investigation, 40 to 50 minutes, that needs a full lab period. The interface is operable from the keyboard, including the investigations, the measuring tools and the dialogs, which trap focus and return it. Measurements and state changes are announced through a live region, and the canvas carries a text description of what is on it that updates as the system evolves. Automated checks (axe-core) and a set of manual keyboard walkthroughs run in continuous integration on every change.
